Our Commitment to American Arts & Crafts
At Diddywopps & Keeffers, we are committed to the ideal of the American Arts & Crafts movement, which was initiated in the late 1800’s in response to the mass industrialization sweeping the world at the time. Early proponents supported a return to fine craft-making that valued the creativity and energy of individual highly-skilled workers. At a time when factories and mills were first pumping out mass-produced goods, the movement emphasized quality, functionality and beauty over quantity. That same devotion to fine goods and the individuality of the craftsperson drives our commitment. This ideal is more important today, when even those factory and mill jobs no longer exist in America, having been exported to other countries where labor is cheap and quantity matters over the contribution of the laborer.
All of our fine arts and crafts objects are American made by crafts people devoted to their calling. Most of our crafts people make their living from the craft work they do – they have pursued an alternative to the predominant “employer-employee” culture, utilizing their creativity and skill to bring us objects of beauty and function. The arts and crafts movement that started so many decades ago lives on today.
At Diddywopps & Keeffers, we are proud to be a part of this important tradition and to support our artisans as they live a uniquely American dream, where the freedom of the individual spirit is celebrated. So, as you browse through our gallery, know that you are seeing the work of creative and skilled American crafts people, devoted to making beautiful and functional quality goods.
Thank you for helping us keep this ideal alive and well.
